Under Alpine skies
Near the French-Italian border, the massif known as Mont Cenis rises in France's department of Savoie. While not especially lofty, topping out at less than 12,000 feet, this long ridgeline of peaks includes a mountain pass with a long history, linking the Graian and Cottian Alps—named for the long-past provinces of the Roman Empire that once enclosed them. Today, the pass is still important to both regional transport and travel, lying between Grenoble and the Italian city of Turin—both major urban centers of Alpine culture.
