A low-tide tableau
Between its renowned stretches of sunny, sandy beach, San Diego's shores are lined with steep cliffs and ocean-battered rock beds. Many of the pits and crevices worn into the stone remain filled with water at low tide, making fine habitats for anemones, starfish, sea slugs, and other small marine creatures. This popular patch of tide pools is located just below the cliff-bounded La Jolla neighborhood, home to a major underwater wildlife reserve and the West Coast's oldest oceanography institute.
