A 'bridge' to the sea

Ponte dos Ingleses, or the Bridge of the English, is named for the British architects who designed it. This landmark of Fortaleza, Brazil, is really a pier, not a bridge—inspired by Brighton Pier back on the designers' native isle. Atlantic waves have battered it for more than a century, sometimes leaving it in disrepair for lengthy stretches of time. But in its long history it's been put to several uses, including as a lookout during World War II.
