If your screen time has been winning lately, today is a good excuse to change that—we suggest hiking. While National Trails Day was created in 1993 by the American Hiking Society in the United States, Canadians can easily use it as a reason to head outdoors too. From mountain routes in the Rockies to forest trails and coastal paths, Canada has plenty of places worth swapping notifications for fresh air.
Take the Natchez Trace Parkway near Tupelo, Mississippi, featured in today's image. Indigenous communities used this route for centuries before European and American explorers and traders followed it in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Today, the 715-kilometre route still preserves sections where years of travel wore the original path below the surrounding land. Historical markers, forests and open landscapes encourage visitors to slow down, stretch their legs and spend time away from screens. Even a short weekend walk can help reset the mind and break up screen-heavy routines.
