Today, let us explore an optical illusion in the Faroe Islands, an autonomous administrative division of the Kingdom of Denmark. Also called Leitisvatn, this lake on the island of Vágar appears to float far above the ocean. In reality, it sits only around 30 metres above sea level. As the largest lake in the Faroes, Sørvágsvatn has a surface area of over 3 square kilometres and feeds the Bøsdalafossur waterfall, where its waters pour dramatically into the sea.
Far from the North Atlantic, yet equally captivating, is Wular Lake in the Kashmir Valley. Tucked near the town of Bandipora in Jammu and Kashmir, this expansive freshwater lake is among the largest in the Indian subcontinent. Unlike Sørvágsvatn's illusionary drama, Wular's beauty lies in its quiet immensity—shaped by ancient tectonic shifts and sustained by the Jhelum River and its tributaries. Both lakes, though worlds apart, reflect the diversity and grandeur of natural landscapes sculpted by time.
