Info. Tŵr Mawr lighthouse
Built in the 19th century, Tŵr Mawr lighthouse ('great tower' in Welsh) stands on Llanddwyn Island at the southern tip of Anglesey, a much bigger island just off the north-west coast of Wales. The lighthouse is inspired by the design of the area's windmills. About 11 metres tall, it stopped functioning in the 1970s, when it was replaced by a smaller tower nearby.
Llanddwyn Island only becomes cut off from Anglesey's mainland during very high tides. It is named after St Dwynwen, the Welsh patron saint of lovers. Close to this lighthouse, you will find the remains of the church she founded, along with a water well named after her, which became a place of pilgrimage after she died. According to legend, it is home to sacred fish that can predict whether couples’ relationships will succeed.
