In the United States, most may assume any crop grown in a place called Marlborough is destined to end up in a pack of smokes. Not so in New Zealand, where the name evokes another vice (albeit one much easier on the lungs): wine. Set upon the strait that separates the nation's two main islands, the South Island's Marlborough region sits in a fairly dry rain shadow that's perfect for grape growing. Vineyards cover the valleys here, much like seawater did thousands of years ago to form the distinctive Marlborough Sounds nearby.
