The fjord that got bored
It wasn't so long ago that the uninhabited valley of Héðinsfjörður was every bit as isolated as this shot makes it look. Unlike the neighboring fjords that host the villages of Ólafsfjörður and Siglufjörður, Héðinsfjörður was only accessible by hiking or boating until twin road tunnels were bored through the mountains on each side of it. As it turns out, even boring projects can get a little complicated: The tunnels were first proposed in the 1980s but not completed until 2010, after the two towns merged into one municipality.
