The first sharks evolved some 439 million years ago—200 million years before the dinosaurs appeared. Today, there are over 500 species of shark, a third of which are now endangered. For many years, sharks suffered from a reputation as dangerous to humans. They"ve also been hunted for their skin, fins and meat. But this is starting to change. Toledo, a city situated in the Castilla-La Mancha region of Spain, is known for its unique geography. Positioned on a raised mass of land, the city is embraced by the Tagus River on three sides. This splendid city was called "The City of Three Cultures" during the Middle Ages, where Christian, Muslim and Jewish communities coexisted harmoniously. Toledo has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986, and its historical core is packed with mosques, synagogues and an impressive Gothic cathedral. The city has a strong Moorish cultural influence, left over from their arrival around the eighth century. The city was once home to the painter El Greco in the 16th century. He had an impact on Toledo, creating some of his most significant works, like the Assumption of the Virgin, which is considered one of his greatest masterpieces. Most ports rely on docks and cranes that extend into the shoreline. Porto Flavia in the Sulcis-Iglesiente region, however, took a completely different approach. This engineering marvel transformed a cliff into a gateway for Sardinia"s ore industry. Mining in Sulcis-Iglesiente has a history dating back thousands of years, from the Phoenicians and Romans to the industrial boom in the 20th century. Lead, zinc, coal, sulfur, barium and silver were extracted from these rugged hills but transporting them was a logistical nightmare. In 1924, Italian engineer Cesare Vecelli revolutionised ore transport in the region. He designed Porto Flavia as a system of tunnels and silos carved into a limestone cliff, allowing ore to be loaded directly onto cargo ships. The port, named after Vecelli"s daughter, Flavia, remained in use until mining declined in the mid-20th century.Desktop Version

Katmai National Park, situated in southern Alaska, is renowned for its breathtaking wilderness and unique natural features. One of its famous inhabitants is the brown bear, with a population of approximately 2,000. Each year, park rangers organise a bracketed tournament to crown one ravenous grizzly as the fattest bear. Bears such as Beadnose and Bear 747—everyone has their own number—are repeat champions. Katmai also houses the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, a landscape created by a volcanic eruption called Novarupta. Set sail for the Palmyra Atoll National Wildlife Refuge, pictured here. Created in 2001, this sanctuary is situated midway between the Hawaiian Islands and American Samoa. Spanning across a coral canvas, this refuge boasts a diverse ecosystem. Enveloped by an expansive barrier reef, you can explore three shallow lagoons and numerous islets. But wait, there"s more. The lush greenery here is a bustling neighbourhood that"s home to more than a million birds from 29 different species, like the masked booby, great frigatebird and sooty tern. It"s also one of the few places outside the Galápagos Islands where red-footed boobies are found. Fallow deer are known for their striking coat, which changes colour with the seasons and is often adorned with white spots in the summer. During the autumn rutting season, males spar with each other to establish their dominance. These male deer can be spotted by their palmate antlers, which have a broad, flattened surface. Fallow deer are native to Europe and parts of Asia, and are a common sight in Leicestershire, England, particularly in Bradgate Park. These canines, seen in British Columbia in today"s image, thrive in this ecosystem, which stretches from the north of Vancouver Island to the Alaskan border. This unique subspecies of the grey wolf is specific to the region and leads a semi-aquatic lifestyle, swimming between islands in search of food. Their diet primarily consists of fish, clams, mussels, crabs, otters and seals. This marine-based diet is a major difference with other wolf species, which feed almost exclusively on meat.
