Paddling a painted forest. Colourful bald cypress, Xuancheng, Anhui, China
People paddle through a glowing maze of bald cypress in Xuancheng, Anhui, where autumn transforms flooded woodlands into a tapestry of amber, copper and deep rust. Known scientifically as 'Taxodium distichum’, bald cypress is unusual among conifers because it sheds its soft, feathery needles each fall, turning reddish-brown before they drop.
Some specimens are exceptionally long-lived, with historical records reporting trees more than 1,000 years old. As rowers glide across the still water, they weave through a landscape that reflects the tree's natural affinity for wetlands. The scene is especially striking in late autumn, when the foliage shifts from green to fiery shades that shimmer across the water, turning the forest into a living painting.
