Where the Mediterranean reigns supreme. Villefranche-sur-Mer, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France
In September, the French Riviera is bathed in softer light, and the Mediterranean vegetation begins to regain its vibrancy. Along the coast, rosemary, wild thyme and Aleppo pine scent the air, while sailboats drift across the sheltered waters of Villefranche-sur-Mer.
The town's spectacular bay is one of the deepest natural harbours in the Mediterranean, allowing large ships to anchor close to shore. Above the waterfront, pastel-coloured buildings climb the hills, while the 16th-century Fort Saint-Elme stands as a reminder of the town's strategic past. Wander through the old streets and you can discover Rue Obscure, a covered medieval passageway once used for defence and shelter.
Villefranche-sur-Mer has also inspired artists and filmmakers. Jean Cocteau transformed the Chapel of Saint Peter in 1957, covering its interior with colourful murals celebrating the lives of local fishermen. With its deep blue waters, historic streets and Mediterranean vegetation, the town blends natural beauty, heritage and Riviera charm.
