Water, wildlife, and wonder. World Lake Day
Imagine a world without the natural wonders that hold about 90% of Earth's surface freshwater. Lakes are among our planet's most valuable resources. They provide clean water, support wildlife, help regulate climate, and sustain communities around the globe. In recognition of their vital role, the United Nations designated August 27 as World Lake Day, first observed in 2025. The need for action is greater than ever. More than 117 million lakes cover nearly 4% of Earth's land surface, yet many face growing pressure from pollution, overuse, and climate change.
Pictured here is Lake Magadi, a shallow alkaline lake in Kenya's Great Rift Valley. Its mineral-rich waters support abundant algae, attracting vast flocks of lesser flamingos that gather there to feed. The birds' pink hues often transform the shoreline into a dazzling spectacle. On World Lake Day, scenes like this remind us that healthy lakes nurture extraordinary wildlife and help sustain life far beyond their shores.
