Sleek, social and spotted—the Atlantic spotted dolphin is a standout in the ocean. Found mainly in warm, temperate waters of the Atlantic Ocean, these dolphins are known for their unique spotted patterns, which become more visible as they age.
Juveniles start with a plain grey body, but as they mature, spots cover their skin, making each dolphin's pattern entirely unique. From leaping through waves to chatting in clicks and whistles, dolphins are all about social life. They often travel in pods and love to check out passing boats whenever they get the chance. You'll find them in the warm temperate and tropical waters of the Atlantic, hunting fish in coordinated groups. Santa Maria Island, part of Portugal's Azores archipelago, is a popular spot to witness these dolphins in action. Their speed and agility make them efficient hunters—and a thrill to watch.
