June is Pride Month, commemorating the Stonewall uprising, a series of protests by the LGBTQIA+ community that took place on June 28, 1969, in response to a police raid at the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village in New York City, USA. Various events around the world are held in June to honour and celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community, their history, achievements and ongoing pursuit for equality.

In Canada, the first official Pride events took place in major cities like Toronto and Vancouver in the 1970s. Within a few years, they were attended by millions and Pride Month has become a nationwide celebration of diversity, inclusion and acceptance. Pride Toronto, a non-profit organisation, ensures that the occasion is celebrated to its fullest! They host one of the largest gay pride festivals in the world in Greater Toronto. During this month, vibrant parades hit the streets and buildings light up in the colours of the rainbow—a symbol of the LGBTQIA+ social movements—to praise freedom for all.
