A scented sea of purple. A field of English lavender
The picturesque county of Somerset, in south-west England is renowned for its lovely lavender fields. Delighting the senses with their vibrant hues and fragrant blooms, they offer a captivating sight. Lavender came to England with the Romans around 2,000 years ago. While lavender is nice to look at, the Romans likely brought it with them for its many practical uses including cooking, repelling insects, and as an antiseptic. Many perfumes, modern and historical, have featured lavender, and Queen Elizabeth I is purported to have used it. Lavender fields are still common in England today, and these ones in Somerset are a true delight, enchanting all who encounter their natural beauty.
