The fjords of Italy. Lake Valvestino, Lombardy
This overhead shot is taken in the mountainous area between Lake Garda and Lake Idro in the northern Italian region of Lombardy. This 400ft (122m) dam, built in the early 1960s, blocks the waters of the Toscolano River – which feeds into Lake Garda – and creates the artificial lake of Valvestino, as well as generating electricity. Surrounded by pristine forests and tall cliffs, the long, narrow lake has the air of beautiful Norwegian fjords and its emerald waters reflect the mountains around it.
The lake boasts overhangs, coves and fantastic views and, when the water level drops, you can admire the remains of a 19th century customs house, used to regulate the passage of people and goods until the First World War - a stolen glimpse back in time, to when this picturesque area was an important hub under the rule of the Austro-Hungarian empire.
