It’s Mountain Day in Japan, nearly three quarters of which is made up of mountains. Sitting in the Pacific Ring of Fire volcanic zone, its four major islands - Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu and Shikoku - all have ranges running through them.
The 9,065ft (2,763m) Mt Tsubakuro featured on our homepage today is a popular hiking destination, with well-maintained trails, rest areas and lodges. Beautiful scenery abounds here on the island of Honshu, less than a three-hour drive from Tokyo.
At 12,389ft (3,776m), snow-capped Mount Fuji is Japan's tallest mountain and one of the most-pictured peaks in the world. The country’s rugged terrain draws in the tourists, with opportunities for skiing, climbing and Japan’s many hot springs.
