Peek-a-boo!
Scientifically known as ursus americanus, there are about 500,000 black bears in forested areas across Canada. Their ability to adapt helps them thrive in various landscapes. Large and stocky, black bears can weigh up to 600 pounds in adulthood. Despite being categorized as carnivores, they follow an omnivorous diet; typically feasting on plants, fruits and pinecones. They put on weight and store fat through summer in anticipation of the long winters, during which black bears hibernate by entering a state of sleep for a period of 100 days or more.
