Carved by glaciers. A landscape carved by glaciers
The Cove of Spires is just one of the dramatic landscapes forming the Kenai Fjords National Park, in the US state of Alaska. This spectacular park gets its name from the many fjords which have been carved by ancient glaciers. Kenai Fjords is home to the Harding Icefield, 700 square miles of ice up to a mile thick, the remnants of a massive ice sheet that covered much of Alaska in the Pleistocene era (from around 2.6 million years ago to around 11,700 years ago.) But while the 38 glaciers of Kenai Fjords still cover over half of the park in ice, recent decades have seen a dramatic reduction due to climate change.
