Pretty in pink
No, your eyes do not deceive you – this is not a Photoshop edit, nor the work of a very large bottle of food colouring. Today we’re transporting you to the truly stunning waters of Bumbunga Lake in South Australia. Located between the two towns of Lochiel and Bumbunga, it’s a natural marvel that never fails to draw a crowd with its bright pink hues. But that isn’t always the case – the colour of the water actually changes multiple times throughout the year depending on the level of salinity. That means you might catch glimpses of pink, blue, or even white.
Lake Bumbunga is also made up of numerous salt pans (otherwise known as salt flats) that, once the heat of summer begins to dry out the lake bed, have been harvested since the 1880s. The end product has had a plethora of uses, from being added to swimming pools all the way to your common cooking salt.
