The glacial beauty of Moraine Lake
It’s Canada Day and our homepage image looks out onto glacier-fed Moraine Lake in Banff National Park, a view so striking it once featured on Canada's $20 bill. Canada Day, celebrated on 1 July, commemorates the day in 1867 when it was recognised as a self-governing country under the British Empire. It’s not exactly Canadian Independence Day but it marks the passing of the Constitution Act of 1867, the first major step toward its sovereignty.
Moraine Lake is just one of the many beautiful areas in Canada’s oldest national park. Located in Alberta's Rocky Mountains, Banff covers more than 2,500 square miles - although perhaps we should say 6,641 square kilometres, after all, it's Canada Day.
