Stepwells in India are most common in the western region, especially Gujarat. As the name suggests, a stepwell is one wherein you can climb down the steps to reach the water level. These are reminiscent of the Indus Valley Civilization which flourished in the region around 3300 BCE to 1300 BCE. The stepwells in Gujarat, like the magnificient Adalaj Stepwell that is featured on today’s homepage, were made around 600 A.D., after which the trend spread to Rajasthan and further up the northern regions of the country.
