Highland cattle in winter
This hardy cattle breed originated in the Highlands and Western Isles of Scotland, but have spread to far-flung corners of the world, including the Andes where they can be found foraging at over 10,000 feet. They are well suited to harsh winter conditions due to their thick, double-layered coats, while they can use their sweeping horns to dig through snow to find food. Their size – bulls can weigh up to 800 kilograms (1,800 pounds) and cows up to 500 kilograms (1,100 pounds) – can make them appear a little intimidating, but looks can be deceiving. These shaggy beasts are considered gentle giants and a highly intelligent breed.
